Beyond Perfect ESP
Here’s another review of an effect recently brought to my attention. Beyond perfect ESP by John George, available from Penguin magic.
What is it?
Beyond perfect ESP is an ESP match up effect where the magician or mentalist predicts every card the spectator thinks of before they choose it and when you finish performing you are instantly reset to perform again.
What you get
A 22 minute download featuring 8 minutes of performance, a couple of minutes explaining the history of the effect and the rest of the download is the explanation which is very clear and easy to follow along with. You also receive 2 sets of ESP cards (red and blue), the gimmick which is needed to perform the effect and a PDF detailing how to m*** the cards in a very simple manner.
I will say though, if your eyesight isn’t too great, you may struggle.
Who is this for?
This effect is suitable for magicians and mentalists looking for something to keep in their wallet as part of an everyday carry.
Fragmented Thoughts
Although there are no difficult moves there is a move required and whilst it isn’t difficult, if you’re not comfortable performing sleights then you may want to think about learning some basic card techniques before attempting the move.
I feel that this type of effect would be great as an opener or a closer for your close up or strolling set, it’s easy enough to do and you could quite easily learn the required move with an hour or two practise.
I would have preferred the cards to be made of a plastic, that way they won’t be ruined once they get wet, but for $20 what do you expect?
You won’t be able to have a spectator examine the cards immediately after the effect without first removing the gimmick but then again everything seems so fair and is displayed openly at the end, that there should be no reason why anybody would want to examine them.
Even though this isn’t my cup of tea, mainly because I have other ESP effects that I prefer. I still think John George has done a great job and this is a nice little packet trick that will definitely fool magicians and lay people.
