3rd Time Lucky

Some people join a magic club once and stay for life.
Some drift away, get distracted by work, family and life, then wander back in. Then there’s me: Rejoining the same magic club for the 3rd time. that’s right, I’ve returned… Again!

The club might need to install a revolving door with my name on it or maybe a little brass plaque that reads: “Ryan Mentis, occasional visitor and part time magician who’s known to disappear for extended periods of time!”

I first joined The Order of The Magi sometime around 1992, but I soon discovered that girls weren’t so impressed with a bum bag full of playing cards, pieces of rope, a plastic thumb and those little walnut shell thingys. So I ditched the magic and set upon my next mission; Trying my hardest to be cool.

I still performed the odd card trick here & there, but I didn’t fully embrace my inner nerd again until many years later.
I did rejoin The Magi a few years back but I resigned after a little bit of Argy Bargy, which actually had nothing to do with me.

Anyway, I really missed being around fellow oddballs.
So 3rd time’s a charm and all that. I’m back at the club, ready to learn and enjoy our weird little world where a deck of cards can cause a room full of human adults to forget how counting works!

A magic club offers something you don’t get from watching videos online or practising alone in the kitchen while the cat judges you. (So judgey)
You get to be in a room with other weirdos, where you can try something out, see how it lands, get useful feedback and learn from people with different experiences and ways of thinking.

I’m not returning to the club with a dramatic speech, a violin sound track or anything like that. I’m just happy to be back and I’m looking forward to learning, meeting people again, sharing ideas and getting more performance time under my belt.
If you’re a magician or mentalist who’s been thinking about joining a club, give it a go. You’ll find encouragement, inspiration, new friends and at least one person willing to show you a back palm using a biscuit.

Fragmented Thoughts
The Order of The Magi are having their annual (indoor) magic car boot sale. So, if like me you’ve got drawers (and wardrobes) full of old tricks, books & DVD’s that you no longer want, why not book a table and give it a new home?
